Day 8 - Athens, Greece

We started our day with a bus tour of Athens. Kind of tough to take pictures, but I got a few good ones. Can't say I remember what all the buildings were.

This one had some nice artwork behind the columns.

We stopped for pictures at the ancient Olympic stadium.

Then we walked around the ancient agora.

Took some pictures on the Stoa of Attalos. This was a common place to meet and do business from 159 BC until it was destroyed in 267 AD. There was also a bema in front of it for speeches.

This is the temple of Hephaistos in the agora opposite the Stoa.

This is the denari used in Jesus' time. Remember the question asked of Jesus, should we pay taxes? This was the coin he was handed.

Mars Hill, where Paul gave his speech recorded in Acts 17.

A view of Mars hill from above (from the acropolis)

Paul's speech is engraved and mounted on the side of Mars hill. Of course, it's in Greek, but you can read it in Acts. Our guide read it to us in Greek.

This is the sloping side of Mars hill. The other sides are steep. Somewhere on this slope would have been the alter to the unknown god.

On the hill shown here, a group of elected officials would meet. Essentially the parliament of ancient Athens. Depending on what you mean, it could be argued that democracy was born right on this hill.

Following our time on Mars hill, we headed up to the acropolis.

The temple of Athena Nike is the first to greet visitors.

The monumental entrance was definitely monumental.

The Parthenon is of course a major attraction. This was designed as the home of Athena.

Here we are with the Erechtheion in the back with its famous porch of the maidens.

Athens with the sea in the background from the acropolis.

After lunch we caught the bus at Hadrian's arch.
